A Beginner’s Guide to Choosing a Golf Cart Conversion Kit

Controller kit or full AC conversion, 440A or 600A, 4kW or 5kW. Find your cart below and see exactly which kit fits it, what it changes and what else the job needs.

Golf cart conversion kit: Navitas TAC2 DC to AC kit with AC motor, controller, cables and On-The-Fly programmer
A complete DC to AC conversion kit: Navitas AC motor, TAC2 controller, cabling and programmer. Smaller controller kits keep your existing motor.
Key Takeaways
  • The controller label picks the kit, not the body or the year. Read it before you shop.
  • Three kinds of kit: a TSX controller kit keeps your DC motor, a DC to AC conversion replaces motor and controller, and an AC controller kit is for carts that are already AC.
  • The Club Car DS takes 4kW motors only. The 5kW motor is too long for the frame.
  • RXV, S4, L6, Drive2 AC and ICON carts are already AC. They need a controller kit, not a conversion.
  • 440A for everyday use, 600A for hills and heavy carts, and the 850A TAC3 only when the whole cart is built for it.

You want your cart to pull up the hill without slowing to a walk, or you just want it to feel quicker. You open the parts store and find fifty golf cart conversion kits with names full of amps, kilowatts and controller numbers. Here is the 30-second answer: know three things, your cart, the label on your controller and your pack voltage, then find your cart in the tables below. Each row names one goal and the kit that meets it, why it fits and whether you need anything else. No guesswork, and no kit that turns up and does not plug in.

What This Guide Helps You Choose

A conversion kit is the set of parts that changes how your cart drives: a new controller, the harness that plugs it into your cart, a programmer, and in the bigger kits a new AC motor too. We carry 50 of them, and on a store page they really do look alike. They are not interchangeable. Each one is built for one controller, one plug and one voltage.

By the end of this page you will know which kit belongs on your cart, whether that is a stock 36V E-Z-GO TXT, a 48V Club Car DS, a Yamaha Drive, an RXV that is already AC, or a cart someone has already upgraded. You need three facts, and none of them take more than a few minutes:

  1. The cart and its year. Run the serial number through our E-Z-GO serial lookup, Club Car serial decoder or Yamaha serial lookup. The serial tells you the model. It does not tell you the kit.
  2. The label on the controller. Lift the seat and find the controller, the metal box with the heavy cables. Read its label and look at the plug that goes into it. That part number (Curtis 1206HB, Curtis 1510, Moric 26 pin and so on) is what every kit on this page is matched to.
  3. The pack voltage. Count the batteries and multiply by the voltage printed on each one, or read it off the lithium pack. Six 8V batteries make 48V; six 6V batteries make 36V.

Got those? Jump straight to your cart:

Every table below reads the same way. Your cart is what you found under the seat. Your goal is what you want the upgrade to do. Buy this is the kit, Why this one is the reason it fits, and What else you need tells you if anything has to be added to finish the job. When a cart has more than one sensible route, each route gets its own row.

Quick Picks: The Right Conversion Kit for the Most Common Carts

Short on time? These are the answers for the carts we are asked about most. Each one is explained in full in its own section below, along with every other cart we cover.

Controller Kit or AC Conversion: The Three Kinds of Golf Cart Conversion Kit

Every kit in our range is one of three types. Knowing which type you are looking at clears up most of the confusion.

Type 1

DC controller kit (Navitas TSX 3.0)

Replaces the stock controller and keeps your DC motor. You get more controlled current, adjustable speed and acceleration, and Bluetooth app control. It is the smallest job: a controller and a plug-in harness.

Type 2

DC to AC conversion kit (Navitas TAC2, TAC3, Eco Battery)

Replaces the controller and the motor with an AC system. It holds speed better on climbs and adds regenerative braking. More work to fit, and the biggest change to how the cart drives.

Type 3

AC controller kit (Navitas TAC2 for AC carts)

For carts that already have an AC motor, such as the E-Z-GO RXV, Yamaha Drive2 AC and ICON. It swaps the stock AC controller for a tunable one. There is no motor in the box because you do not need one.

Special case

TSX 1.0 to 3.0 replacement

If a Navitas TSX 1.0 is already fitted, a replacement kit moves you to the TSX 3.0 with an adapter harness. It is covered in the already upgraded section.

Navitas TSX 3.0 DC controller kit for the E-Z-GO TXT 48V with vehicle harness and On-The-Fly programmer
A Type 1 kit: the TSX 3.0 for the E-Z-GO TXT 48V. Controller, vehicle harness and programmer. The DC motor stays in the cart.

Which type is right is mostly about the job. A healthy cart that feels flat with two people aboard is usually well served by a controller kit. A cart that climbs, tows or carries four people every day is where an AC conversion earns its keep. If you are weighing the two drive types in general, our DC vs AC motor explainer and controller upgrade guide go deeper on amps, solenoids and cables.

One honest note before the tables: a cart that used to be quick and has slowed down usually has a fault, not a performance limit. A tired battery, a hot cable or a worn solenoid will hold back any kit. The troubleshooter and our guide to making a cart faster cover the free checks first.

Parts note: A typical Type 2 kit: the TAC2 for the E-Z-GO TXT 48V brings the AC motor, controller and programmer in one box. See the TAC2 TXT 48V kit

E-Z-GO TXT and Medalist

If your TXT is stock, the controller label splits it into four different carts. A 48V TXT with a Curtis 1206HB is the most common. Older 36V TXTs came with either PDS (Curtis 1206MX) or DCS (Curtis 1206SX with a 9 pin plug). A TXT ELiTE has a factory Samsung lithium pack and a Curtis 1206HBC, and it takes its own kit. Older series-motor TXTs and Medalists are in the series and ITS section.

A 48V 1206HB cart has three routes: a TSX 3.0 to keep the motor, a TAC2 to go AC, or the TAC3 for the most torque we sell. The 36V PDS and DCS carts take a TSX kit matched to their plug, and for AC on any DC-drive TXT or Medalist there is the Eco Battery kit.

E-Z-GO Series Carts, ITS Utility, MPT and Workhorse

If your E-Z-GO has a series motor, the throttle decides the kit. Series carts with the ITS throttle sensor and series carts with a non-ITS throttle each have their own TSX kit, at 36V or 48V. There is no AC kit for series-motor E-Z-GOs in our range, so for these carts the TSX is the upgrade. The series vs sepex guide shows how to tell the motor types apart.

If it is a 48V utility or shuttle cart such as an MPT or Workhorse with a Curtis 1268 ITS or Curtis 1264 controller, you can keep the motor with a TSX kit or convert to AC with a TAC2.

E-Z-GO RXV, S4 and L6 (Already AC)

If your cart is an RXV, S4 or L6, it already has an AC motor, so you do not need a conversion. You need an AC controller kit that swaps the stock controller for a tunable Navitas TAC2. The motor stays. The RXV comes in three electrical versions, and each takes a different kit.

Club Car DS

If your DS is stock, the body tells you very little. DS carts ran several different drive systems over the years. Read the controller label: a Curtis 1510 means the 48V IQ system, a Curtis 1268 or 1520 takes a different harness, a Regen II (PowerDrive 2) cart has its own kit, and older carts may be series drive.

The DS frame also has a hard limit: it is too short for the 5kW motor. On a DS, every AC option is 4kW. That is a clearance fact, not a tuning preference. A DS with a Curtis 1268 or 1520 has no DS-sized AC kit in our range, so the TSX is its upgrade.

Club Car Precedent, Tempo and Onward

If your Precedent is stock with a DC motor, it has either the IQ system (Curtis 1510 or 1515) or the Excel system (Curtis 1515). Both take the same Navitas kits. The Precedent frame is long enough for every motor size we sell, so this is the one Club Car where every route is open: TSX, TAC2 at 4kW or 5kW, and the TAC3 at 7.5kW. On Excel carts, the dash display functions move to the Navitas app.

Eco Battery kits split by year and seating: one for the Precedent IQ from 2004 to 2008, one for DC Precedent, Tempo and Onward carts from 2009 on (lifted or not), and two for six-passenger Precedents.

If your Precedent, Tempo or Onward already has a factory AC motor, none of the kits in this guide fit it, and we do not sell an AC controller kit for those carts.

If you own an ICON or Advanced EV, the cart is already AC and the controller maker is what matters. Our kits fit the Toyota NEOs M type controller (labels such as 48M350 or 48M450) at 48V. Carts with a NEOs L type, Red Curtis or LVTONG controller (common on 2022 and later carts) are not covered by any kit in our range.

440A or 600A, 4kW or 5kW: Choosing Inside the Kit

Most kits come in more than one rating. Here is how we would choose, and why.

Your cart’s jobControllerMotor (AC kits)Why
Two riders, standard tires, gentle grades440A4kWPlenty for the job, and it asks less of the batteries and cables.
Rear seat, lift and larger tires, or regular hills600A4kW on a DS; 5kW where the frame allowsMore current means more torque when the cart is heavy or climbing.
Steep ground, towing or a heavy cart every day850A (TAC3)7.5kWThe most torque we sell. Only worth it when pack, cables, tires and brakes are built for it.
Eco Battery kits350A, 450A or 600A4kW or 5kWThe same logic: 350A for light use, 450A for mixed, 600A with 5kW for heavy work.

The controller amp calculator does this sizing for your weight and terrain and shows its reasoning. The top speed calculator shows what tire size and gearing do to speed. For motor size in general, read what size motor a golf cart needs.

Parts note: The 850A 7.5kW TAC3 is listed for Precedent IQ and Excel carts, the frame with room for the biggest motor. See the TAC3 Precedent kit

What Else to Order to Finish the Job

Most kits are complete: the controller, harness and programmer, plus the motor, cables and mounting parts on AC kits. A few extras are worth thinking about.

  • A healthy battery pack. A new kit pulls more current. A tired pack sags on the hill and makes the upgrade feel weak. Check it with the battery voltage chart first. If you are moving to lithium at the same time, see our lithium batteries. Lithium packs ship by freight.
  • Good cables and a solenoid that can take the current. On 600A kits especially, undersized or corroded cables turn power into heat. The wire gauge calculator and our controller upgrade guide cover what to check.
  • An On-The-Fly programmer where the kit has none. The 440A AC controller kits are programmed from the phone app. Add the OTF programmer if you want speed and acceleration switches at the seat.
  • A matching charger. If the pack changes voltage or chemistry, the charger must change with it. See our chargers.
  • Spare harnesses and cables. Harnesses, phase wires and motor adapters are also sold on their own in harnesses and programmers, for repairs later.

Mounting, cable and terminal parts

Use the complete kit parts list first. These separate parts are replacements or installation pieces, not universal add-ons. Match the exact SKU, cart, controller connector and motor before ordering.

Six Mistakes That Send Kits Back

  1. Ordering by the body or the year. Two carts that look the same can have different controllers. The label decides.
  2. Putting a 5kW motor in a DS frame. It is too long. On a DS, choose a 4kW option.
  3. Mixing up ELiTE and non-ELiTE. The TXT ELiTE and RXV ELiTE kits are only for carts with the factory Samsung lithium pack. A cart converted to aftermarket lithium takes the standard kit for its controller.
  4. Converting a cart that is already AC. RXV, S4, L6, Drive2 AC and ICON carts need an AC controller kit, not a motor.
  5. Buying a 48V-only kit for a 36V cart. The TXT 1206HB, ITS, G19 and G22 and Columbia kits are 48V. The PDS, DCS, series, G14 and G16 and Star EV Classic kits cover 36V.
  6. Assuming every ICON controller is the same. NEOs L type, Red Curtis and LVTONG controllers are not covered by the NEOs M kits.

Still Not Sure? Three Quick Checks

If your cart seems to fit two rows, one of these settles it:

  1. Read the controller label again, in good light. Wipe it with a dry cloth. The part number on the controller always wins over the year, the body or what the seller told you.
  2. Look at the plug. On a Yamaha, count the pins and rows. On an E-Z-GO series cart, check whether the throttle is ITS or non-ITS. The plug is the second-best clue after the label.
  3. Count the batteries. The pack voltage rules out every kit built for the other voltage, which usually leaves one row.

If the label is gone completely, run the serial through the lookups at the top of this page. The model and year it returns point you to the right section, and the plug then picks the row. The golf cart controller finder does the same in one pass and lists the kits for your cart. If you know the cart but not which kind of kit, the AC conversion kit finder asks about your load, hills and speed goal and recommends the kit and rating.

The Short Version

Read the controller label, count the pack voltage, then find your cart above. Keep the motor with a TSX kit, go AC with a TAC2 or Eco Battery kit, and pick 440A or 600A by the job the cart does, not the biggest number.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a golf cart conversion kit?

It is a matched set of parts that changes how an electric cart drives. A controller kit such as the Navitas TSX 3.0 replaces the stock controller and keeps the DC motor. A DC to AC conversion kit replaces the motor and controller with an AC system. Each kit is built for one specific controller and cart.

Do I need a full AC conversion, or will a controller kit do?

For a healthy cart that feels flat with two people aboard, a controller kit usually does the job and is the smaller install. Choose an AC conversion when the cart climbs, tows or carries four people every day, or when you want regenerative braking.

How do I know which conversion kit fits my cart?

Read the label on the controller under the seat and count your pack voltage. Kits are matched to the controller part number, not the body style or the year. Find your cart in the tables in this guide; when the year and the label disagree, the label wins.

Is there a conversion kit for a 36V golf cart?

Yes. The TSX 3.0 kits for E-Z-GO PDS and DCS, series-motor carts, Yamaha G14 and G16 and the Star EV Classic 36V all cover 36V carts. The E-Z-GO TXT 1206HB, ITS, Yamaha G19 and G22 and Columbia kits are 48V only.

What is the best golf cart conversion kit?

The best kit is the one built for your controller label and the job your cart does. For most healthy 48V DC carts, a Navitas TSX 3.0 controller kit is the best value because it keeps the motor. For carts that climb, tow or carry four people every day, a Navitas TAC2 or Eco Battery DC to AC conversion kit is the bigger upgrade. Carts that are already AC, such as the E-Z-GO RXV, need a TAC2 AC controller kit instead.

Can I install a conversion kit myself?

If you are comfortable isolating the battery pack and following the Navitas manual, yes. A TSX controller kit is the easier job because the motor stays in place. An AC conversion also means removing the motor, so it suits a confident home mechanic or a golf cart technician.
