A Beginner’s Guide to Golf Cart Harnesses and Programmers

Find the Navitas harness, connector module, programmer, AC cable or E-Z-GO J2 connector that matches the controller label, plug and system on your cart.

Golf cart harness: Navitas TSX 3.0 vehicle harness for the E-Z-GO TXT 48V with its controller, cart and programmer plugs
A Navitas TSX 3.0 vehicle harness for the E-Z-GO TXT 48V. Each harness is built for one stock wiring system.
Key Takeaways
  • The label picks the harness. Each TSX 3.0 harness is keyed to one stock controller, such as the Curtis 1206HB, 1510 or 1268.
  • From stock, buy the kit. The TSX 3.0 kit holds the same harness plus the controller and an OTF programmer.
  • Series carts use connector modules, chosen by throttle: E-Z-GO ITS, or non-ITS on Club Car, E-Z-GO and Yamaha.
  • The OTF programmer fits Navitas TSX 3.0 and TAC2 controllers, never stock ones.
  • J2 connectors change the speed profile on 2000 to 2008 36V E-Z-GO PDS carts with no programming.

You are fitting a Navitas controller, replacing a damaged harness, adding speed dials by the seat or looking for more speed from an old E-Z-GO, and every listing seems to say “check your cart first.” Here is the 30-second answer on choosing a golf cart harness: read the stock controller label, count the plug pins on a Yamaha and check the throttle on a series cart, then find that row. If the cart is stock, the complete kit is usually the better buy; the harness on its own is for a controller you already own or a harness that was damaged. Programmers, AC cables and J2 connectors each have their own section.

What This Guide Helps You Do

Harnesses and programmers are the parts that connect everything else. A Navitas controller cannot talk to a stock cart without the right harness, an AC motor cannot report its speed without the right cable, and a driver cannot change speed from the seat without a programmer. Each one is built for one wiring system, so the part that fits is decided by what is under your seat, not by the badge on the front.

This guide covers every harness, connector module, cable and programmer we sell, and tells you when you need each one. Have these three facts ready:

  1. What is on the cart now. Lift the seat and read the controller label. A stock unit reads Curtis 1206HB, 1206MX, 1206SX, 1510, 1515, 1268, 1520, Moric or Sevcon. A Navitas unit reads TSX 3.0, TAC2 or TAC3 with a 10-000XXX-XX number.
  2. The plug or the throttle. On a Yamaha, count the pins on the controller connector, 23 or 26. On a series motor cart (motor terminals A1, A2, S1 and S2), note whether the throttle is the E-Z-GO ITS sensor or another type.
  3. The pack voltage. Count the batteries and multiply by the voltage on each one. Six 6V batteries make 36V; six 8V or four 12V make 48V.

Then jump to your cart or part:

Every table reads the same way. Your cart is what you found under the seat, with the controller label in bold. Your goal says what you are trying to do. Buy this is the part, Why this one gives the fitment reason, and What else you need flags anything the box does not include. When the same cart has two sensible buys, each gets its own row: the complete kit if you are starting from stock, the harness on its own if you already own the controller or the harness was damaged.

Golf Cart Harness and Programmer Types: Four Kinds of Part

Everything in this category does one of four jobs. Knowing which job you need done narrows the choice to a handful of parts before you look at your cart.

Type 1

TSX 3.0 vehicle harnesses and connector modules

These connect a Navitas TSX 3.0 DC controller to the stock wiring of one cart system, keyed to the stock controller label, the pin count or the throttle. The controller is not included, and none of them fit a TAC2 AC controller.

Type 2

The On-The-Fly programmer

A small dash box with three dials, speed, regen and acceleration, plus a key lock and a status light. It plugs into a Navitas TSX 3.0 or TAC2 and lets the driver change settings without a phone.

Type 3

Navitas AC cables

The phase wire carries the heavy current from a Navitas TAC controller to its AC motor. The TAC motor adapter carries the speed sensor and motor temperature signals. Both are for Navitas AC systems only.

Type 4

E-Z-GO J2 performance connectors

Factory E-Z-GO plugs for the J2 option port on 2000 to 2008 36V PDS controllers. Each one sets a speed and braking profile. No controller change, no programming.

The Navitas On-The-Fly programmer: speed, regen and acceleration dials, a key lock that freezes them, and a status light.

Most people in this category are really buying a TSX 3.0 controller swap, and for them the complete kit is the simpler order: it holds the same harness plus the controller and a programmer. The harness on its own is for three people: someone who already owns a TSX 3.0 controller, someone replacing a harness that was cut, crushed or burnt, and someone building a setup from separate parts. If your cart is stock and you are deciding between controllers, the controller replacement guide and the conversion kit guide walk those choices cart by cart. The replacement controller finder and the AC conversion kit finder do the same from your serial number or model.

Alltrax XCT adapters and AC1 sensor cables

The Curtis 1264 and 1268 adapters and FN-KEY belong to the older Alltrax XCT family. The cart-specific motor sensor cables belong to an Alltrax AC1 system. Do not cross those two families.

E-Z-GO TXT 48V, PDS and DCS

If your TXT is stock, the controller label picks the harness. A 48V TXT has a Curtis 1206HB. A PDS cart has a Curtis 1206MX, at 36V or 48V. A 36V DCS cart has a Curtis 1206SX with a 9 pin plug. PDS and DCS carts look alike, so rely on the label, not the body.

A TXT ELiTE with the factory Samsung lithium pack has a Curtis 1206HBC, and none of these harnesses fit it; its only route in our range is the AC kit in the controller guide. A 2000 to 2008 36V PDS cart can also take a J2 connector instead of a new controller; see the J2 section.

E-Z-GO ITS 48V: MPT, Workhorse and Utility Carts

If your 48V E-Z-GO work cart has a stock Curtis 1268 ITS or 1264, as on the MPT and Textron utility models, it takes its own harness, different from the TXT one. Series motor E-Z-GOs with other series controllers use a connector module instead; they are in the next section.

The pedal sensor test covers the ITS throttle if the cart is hesitating rather than dead.

Series Motor Carts: ITS and Non-ITS Connector Modules

If your cart has a series wound motor, the motor has four terminals marked A1, A2, S1 and S2 and no F1 or F2. These carts use a connector module harness rather than a vehicle harness, and the throttle decides which one. E-Z-GO series carts with the ITS throttle sensor take the ITS module. Series carts from Club Car, E-Z-GO and Yamaha with any other throttle take the non-ITS module. Both work at 36V or 48V.

One throttle is not covered: a 2 wire V-glide throttle needs an extra Navitas non-ITS adapter, which we do not sell, so a V-glide cart has no complete setup in our range. The Yamaha G14 and G16 use their own harness set, sold only inside the TSX 3.0 kit for Yamaha G14 and G16.

Club Car and Star EV: IQ, Excel, 1268 and 1520

If your Club Car is stock, there are two harnesses and the controller label chooses. A DS or Precedent on the IQ or Excel system has a Curtis 1510 or 1515. Carryall, Villager and other carts with a Curtis 1268 or 1520 take the second harness, which also fits 48V Star EV carts with the same controllers. The two are not interchangeable.

A Club Car with the Regen II system has no TSX harness in our range; its route is an AC kit, covered in the controller guide. The 36V Star EV Classic uses its own harness, sold only in the kit below.

Columbia ParCar 48V with Sevcon Control

If your ParCar is a 48V cart with a stock Sevcon controller and a shunt motor, it takes the ParCar harness. A shunt motor has separate F1 and F2 field wires running to the old controller. The harness plugs into the cart’s 16 pin OEM connector at one end and the TSX 3.0 at the other, and it has an 8 pin port for the optional OTF programmer. The Navitas On-The-Fly Programmer

If your cart runs a Navitas TSX 3.0 or TAC2, the On-The-Fly programmer puts three dials by the seat. Speed sets the top speed, and Navitas notes that a lower setting stretches range. Regen sets regenerative braking where the controller supports it. Acceleration sets how hard it pulls away. A key lock freezes the dials and a status light gives fault feedback. Navitas also uses the OTF to switch a TSX between series and shunt motor setups.

Every TSX 3.0 kit and most TAC2 conversion kits already include one. You need to buy it when your kit or controller came without it, or to replace a lost or broken unit. It does not fit stock controllers. The Navitas TAC3 is set up in the Navitas app, and our OTF listing is for TSX 3.0 and TAC2 controllers only.

If your cart runs a Navitas TAC2 or TAC3 with a Navitas AC motor, two cables join them. The phase wire carries the drive current. The TAC motor adapter (Navitas 40-000580) carries the speed sensor and motor temperature signals; the Navitas TAC2 manual lists it in the Club Car IQ and E-Z-GO TXT kits with the 4kW and 5kW motors. It is also required, and sold separately, whenever a Navitas 7.5kW motor is fitted to a TAC3 controller. Neither cable fits a DC motor or a non-Navitas AC system.

E-Z-GO PDS 36V: J2 Performance Connectors

If your E-Z-GO is a 2000 to 2008 36V cart with the PDS controller, the controller has a J2 option port, and a factory plug in that port sets its speed and braking profile. It is the cheapest way to change how a PDS cart drives, because nothing else changes. All four connectors install the same way; only the profile differs. They do not fit DCS, series or 48V carts, or any controller without the J2 port.

Compression braking is the controller holding the cart back as it rolls downhill. Heavier braking suits steep ground; none leaves descents to the brake pedal.

  • The controller the harness is for. A TSX 3.0 harness needs a TSX 3.0 440A or TSX 3.0 600A controller. Every TSX harness in this guide is for the TSX 3.0 only.
  • Whatever damaged the old harness. A harness that melted near a terminal usually had a loose lug next to it. Check every connection for heat marks before you fit the new one.
  • Clean, tight power cables. The wire gauge calculator sizes them for your controller.
  • A phone with the Navitas app. Navitas controllers are set up in the app, with or without an OTF programmer.
  • Tidy routing. Keep every harness away from sharp edges, battery terminals and moving parts, and tie it down so water cannot sit in the connectors.
  • Controllers and kits. Complete kits are in conversion kits and bare units in controllers.

New display, conversion and service harnesses

These parts solve different jobs. The CAN display patch harness is required with the 3-inch display except on Navitas Chassis vehicles. The RXV resistor wiring is for the 23-pin route. The STAR EV 1243 and E-Z-GO PDS conversion harnesses stay cart-specific. The two-wire adapter works only with harness 87-10000666 on the documented non-ITS and non-MCOR routes. OTF keys do not include the programmer.

CAN displays and 12V power

A Navitas CAN display reads vehicle speed, direction and battery charge from a CAN-enabled Navitas TAC controller and a CAN-capable battery. The 3-inch round display needs the CAN display patch harness above on every cart except Navitas Chassis vehicles. The 10-inch touchscreen adds entertainment and connectivity features; a CAN-enabled TAC controller upgrade may be needed first, so send us your controller label and we will tell you. For 12V accessories on a 36V to 80V pack, the DC-DC converter steps pack voltage down to a steady 12V.

Six Mistakes With Harnesses and Programmers

  1. Buying the harness and controller separately on a stock cart. The kit is the same harness plus the controller and a programmer in one order.
  2. Matching the cart name instead of the label. One Club Car can have a 1510, 1515, 1268 or 1520, and each has its own harness.
  3. Counting the wrong Yamaha pins. 23 pins is a G19 or G22, 26 pins is a G29. The two harnesses do not swap.
  4. Putting a TSX harness on a TAC2. TSX harnesses are for the DC TSX 3.0 controller only.
  5. Expecting an OTF to run a stock controller. It works only with Navitas TSX 3.0 and TAC2 controllers.
  6. Ordering a J2 connector for a 48V or DCS cart. J2 connectors fit 2000 to 2008 36V PDS controllers only.

Still Not Sure? Three Quick Checks

Torn between two rows? One of these decides it:

  1. Read the controller label in good light. Wipe it with a dry cloth and photograph it with the flash on, then zoom in. The Curtis, Moric, Sevcon or Navitas number always wins over the year or the body style.
  2. Check the plug and the motor. Count Yamaha pins, 23 or 26. Look at the motor terminals: A1, A2, S1 and S2 means series; F1 and F2 means shunt or sepex.
  3. Count the batteries. The pack voltage rules out every harness built for the other voltage, which usually leaves one row.

If the label is gone, run the serial through the E-Z-GO, Club Car or Yamaha lookup. The model and year point you to the right section, and the plug then picks the row.

The Short Version

A TSX 3.0 harness is chosen by the stock controller label, the Yamaha pin count or the series throttle, and a kit is the simpler buy from stock. Add the OTF programmer where a Navitas TSX 3.0 or TAC2 came without one, use the Navitas cables only on Navitas AC systems, and use J2 connectors only on 2000 to 2008 36V PDS carts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a golf cart controller harness?

It is the wiring that connects a replacement controller to the cart’s existing wiring, so the key switch, direction switch, throttle and other inputs reach the new controller without cutting or splicing. A Navitas TSX 3.0 vehicle harness is built for one stock system, such as the E-Z-GO TXT 48V with a Curtis 1206HB or the Club Car IQ with a Curtis 1510 or 1515.

What is the best golf cart harness for my cart?

The best harness is the one built for your stock controller label, plug and throttle. If the cart is still stock, the best buy is usually the complete TSX 3.0 kit for that label, because it holds the same harness plus the controller and an OTF programmer. Buy the harness alone when you already own a TSX 3.0 controller or need to replace a damaged harness.

How do I know which harness fits my golf cart?

Read the stock controller label under the seat, then find that label in this guide. Curtis 1206HB, 1206MX, 1206SX, 1510, 1515, 1268, 1264 and 1520 each point to one harness. On a Yamaha, count the controller plug pins: 23 for a G19 or G22, 26 for a G29. On a series motor cart, check whether the throttle is the E-Z-GO ITS sensor.

Do the harnesses work on both 36V and 48V carts?

Each harness is built for the voltage of the system it fits. The E-Z-GO PDS harness and the two series connector modules work at 36V or 48V. The DCS harness is 36V only. The TXT 48V, ITS 48V, Club Car, Yamaha and ParCar harnesses are 48V. E-Z-GO J2 connectors are 36V PDS only.

Does the On-The-Fly programmer work with any golf cart controller?

No. The Navitas On-The-Fly programmer works with Navitas TSX 3.0 and TAC2 controllers. It does not work with stock Curtis, Moric or Sevcon controllers or with controllers from other makers. The Navitas TAC3 is set up in the Navitas app.

How do I install a golf cart harness?

Disconnect the battery pack first. Unplug the stock controller, plug the harness into the cart connector at one end and the Navitas controller at the other, then route it away from sharp edges, battery terminals and moving parts and tie it down. Set the controller up in the Navitas app before the first drive. A J2 connector simply plugs into the J2 port on the PDS controller.
