How to find the upgrade kit that fits your cart

The AC Conversion Kit Finder at the top of this page matches an upgrade kit to your golf cart and to what you want from it. A few one-tap questions, and it ends on the kits that plug into your cart, each ready to order. It is free and there is no sign-up.

  1. Pick your cart. Choose the make and model, or type the serial number of a Club Car, E-Z-GO or Yamaha.
  2. Confirm the setup. If your model came with more than one electrical system, count the batteries and pick the setup that matches what you see under the seat. Each option lists the clues: the controller label, the plug and how the cart behaves.
  3. Say what you want. More top speed, more hill power or both, then how hard the cart works and what batteries it runs.
  4. Read the answer. The best route for your cart comes first, with the reasons under How we worked it out. The other routes that fit sit in their own tabs.
  5. Choose a kit and check out. Press Choose this kit, pick the rating (the one for your job is marked), and press Add to cart. The button then turns into View cart.

Examples: from your cart to your kit

An E-Z-GO TXT 48V that slows down on hills

  1. Choose E-Z-GO, then TXT or Medalist, then 48V pack.
  2. Pick TXT 48V: the controller label reads Curtis 1206HB.
  3. Tap More hill power, Medium and Lead-acid, healthy.

What you see: Best route for your cart: a DC to AC conversion, 600A with a 5kW motor. The Navitas TAC2 kit for the TXT 48V leads the conversion tab, with the Eco Battery kit, the Alltrax AC1 and the 850A TAC3 after it. The keep your motor tab holds the TSX controller kit if you would rather keep your motor.

A Club Car DS with the IQ system

  1. Choose Club Car, then DS, then 48V pack, then DS with the IQ system.
  2. Tap Both, Medium and your batteries.

What you see: an AC conversion at 600A with a 4kW motor. Open a kit and the 5kW rating is greyed out with the reason: the 5kW motor is too long for the DS frame.

A Yamaha Drive (G29) that feels flat on the straight

  1. Choose Yamaha, then Drive (G29).
  2. Tap More top speed, Light and Lead-acid, healthy.

What you see: a controller kit that keeps your motor, 440A. The Navitas TSX kit for the G29 comes first; the Curtis 500A kit and the AC conversions are there to compare.

An E-Z-GO RXV, built 2012 or later

  1. Choose E-Z-GO, then RXV, then 48V pack, then RXV 2012 and up: the plug on the controller has 35 pins.
  2. Answer the three questions.

What you see: an AC controller kit. The RXV is already AC, so there is no motor to change: the Navitas TAC2 kit for the RXV with the Curtis controller and the Alltrax AC1 kit, with the rating for your job marked.

A cart that used to be faster

AC conversion kits and upgrade kits by cart

What a dealer sells as a golf cart speed kit or speed upgrade kit is usually one of two things: a controller kit that keeps your motor, or a DC to AC conversion kit that swaps the motor and the controller. Here is what fits each popular cart, and why.

Club Car Precedent AC conversion kit

The Precedent runs 48V with a Curtis 1510 or 1510A controller (IQ) or a Curtis 1515 (Excel). Both take the same kits. To keep your motor, the Navitas TSX 3.0 kit or the Curtis 1268 500A kit swaps the controller. To go AC, the frame takes every motor size: the Navitas TAC2 with a 4kW or 5kW motor, the TAC3 850A with 7.5kW, the Alltrax AC1 650A 5.5kW or an Eco Battery kit.

Tip: the Eco Battery kits are split by year, 2004 to 2008 or 2009 and newer, and by the standard or 6 passenger chassis. Open the finder for a Club Car Precedent, or read the Precedent hill and speed upgrade guide.

Club Car DS AC conversion kit

A 48V DS with the IQ system runs a Curtis 1510 like an IQ Precedent, so it takes the same Navitas TSX 3.0 and Curtis 1268 500A controller kits. The AC route is narrower: the 5kW motor is too long for the DS frame, so a DS takes the Navitas TAC2 with the 4kW motor, at 440A or 600A, or the Eco Battery DS kit with a 4kW motor.

Tip: an older DS with a Regen II, a Curtis 1268 or a series motor is its own setup in the finder. Open the finder for a Club Car DS, or read which kit fits your DS.

Club Car Tempo and Onward upgrade kit

A Tempo or Onward with a DC motor runs a Curtis 1510 or 1515 controller on a 48V pack. To keep the motor, the Navitas TSX 3.0 kit for IQ and Excel fits. To go AC, the Alltrax AC1 650A 5.5kW kit and the Eco Battery kit for 2009 and newer Club Cars fit.

Tip: a DC motor has a round brush band and two or three thick cables. A Tempo or Onward with a factory AC motor is already AC, so there is nothing to convert. Open the finder for a Club Car Tempo or Onward, or read our conversion kit guide.

E-Z-GO TXT AC conversion kit

Most TXTs are one of three setups, and the controller label says which. A TXT 48V with a Curtis 1206HB has the widest choice: the Navitas TSX 3.0 kit keeps the motor, and the Navitas TAC2 (440A 4kW or 600A 5kW), the TAC3 850A 7.5kW, the Alltrax AC1 650A 5.5kW and the Eco Battery kit convert it to AC. A PDS (Curtis 1206MX, 36V or 48V) takes its own TSX 3.0 kit or the Curtis 1268 500A kit, a DCS (Curtis 1206SX, 36V) its own TSX 3.0 kit, and both take the Eco Battery AC kit.

Tip: a PDS cart slows itself when you lift off the pedal. Open the finder for an E-Z-GO TXT, or read the TXT 48V upgrade guide.

E-Z-GO RXV AC controller kit

The RXV is AC from the factory, so it takes an AC controller kit that keeps the motor, not a conversion: the Navitas TAC2 at 440A or 600A, or the Alltrax AC1 650A. Carts from 2008 to 2011 (Danaher controller) and from 2012 (Curtis 1206AC) each have their own kit.

Tip: count the pins on the controller plug. 35 pins means 2012 and up. Open the finder for an E-Z-GO RXV, or read the RXV speed and hill upgrade guide.

Yamaha Drive (G29) AC conversion kit

The Drive (G29) runs 48V with a Moric controller on a 26 pin plug. To keep the motor, the Navitas TSX 3.0 kit for the G29 or the Curtis 1268 500A kit swaps the controller. To go AC: the Navitas TAC2 with a 4kW motor at 440A or 600A, or the TAC3 850A with 7.5kW.

Tip: the plug on the controller has 26 pins in two rows. Open the finder for a Yamaha Drive (G29), or read TSX or AC conversion for the G29.

Yamaha Drive2 upgrade kit

The Drive2 was built with a DC motor or an AC motor, and the kits differ. A DC Drive2 has the same Moric controller and 26 pin plug as the G29, so it takes the Navitas TSX 3.0 kit for the G29 or the TAC3 850A 7.5kW AC conversion. A Drive2 AC runs a Toyota NEOs M type controller and is already AC: it takes the Navitas TAC2 AC controller kit at 440A or 600A, or the Alltrax AC1 650A.

Tip: a DC motor has a round brush band and two or three thick cables. Open the finder for a Yamaha Drive2, or read our conversion kit guide.

440A or 600A, 4kW or 5kW: matching the kit to the job

Most kits come in more than one rating. Pick by the job the cart does, not the biggest number. More current means more torque, but it also asks more of the batteries and cables.

Your cart’s jobControllerMotor (AC kits)
Two riders, standard tires, gentle grades440A4kW
Rear seat in use, a lift and bigger tires, or regular hills600A5kW where the frame allows, 4kW on a DS

FAQ

AC conversion kit FAQs

Which AC conversion kit fits my golf cart?
The kit is matched to the controller on your cart, not the body or the year. Pick your cart in the AC Conversion Kit Finder, confirm the setup from the clues under the seat, and it lists the DC to AC conversion kits and controller kits made for that controller, with the rating that suits the job your cart does.
Do I need a full AC conversion, or will a controller kit do?
For a healthy cart that feels flat with two people aboard, a controller kit usually does the job and is the smaller install, because the DC motor stays. Choose an AC conversion when the cart climbs, tows or carries four people every day, or when you want regenerative braking.
Should I pick 440A or 600A?
Pick by the job the cart does, not the biggest number. 440A is plenty for two riders on gentle grades and asks less of the batteries and cables. 600A gives more torque for a rear seat, a lift and bigger tires, or regular hills. The 850A TAC3 is only worth it on steep ground, towing or a heavy cart, when the pack, cables, tires and brakes are built for it.
Can a Club Car DS take a 5kW motor?
No. The 5kW motor is too long for the DS frame, so every AC option for a DS is 4kW. The finder blocks the 5kW ratings when you pick a DS. The Precedent frame takes the 4kW, 5kW and 7.5kW motors.
Can I convert an E-Z-GO RXV, Yamaha Drive2 AC or ICON to AC?
They are already AC from the factory, so there is nothing to convert. What they take is an AC controller kit: a tunable controller with the wiring for the cart, and the factory AC motor stays. The finder shows those kits when you pick one of these carts.
What comes in a DC to AC conversion kit?
An AC motor, an AC controller, the cabling between them and the mounting parts, matched to one cart and one controller. A controller kit has the controller and a plug-in harness and keeps your motor. Each product page lists exactly what is in its box.
Will an AC conversion make my golf cart faster?
An AC system holds its speed on climbs and with a load far better than a stock DC drive, and the controller sets the top speed within the limits you choose. Top speed on the flat also depends on the motor, the tires and the gearing; the top speed calculator shows what each one does.
Is a golf cart speed kit the same as an AC conversion kit?
Not always. Speed kit is a dealer name, not one part. It usually means a controller kit, which keeps your motor and suits a cart that feels flat on the straight, or a DC to AC conversion kit, which changes the motor and the controller and holds speed on climbs and with a load. If your cart has slowed down over time, run the free checks first: a tired battery or a hot cable holds back any kit.
Do I need new batteries with an upgrade kit?
Not always, but the pack has to keep up. A new kit pulls more current, and a tired lead-acid pack sags on the hill and makes the upgrade feel weak. If you run lithium, check the pack is rated 500A peak or higher.
Can I install a conversion kit myself?
If you are comfortable isolating the battery pack and following the manual, yes. A controller kit is the easier job because the motor stays in place. An AC conversion also means taking the old motor out, so it suits a confident home mechanic or a golf cart technician.
