A DC-motor cart still uses electronic switching. Controllers such as the Alltrax XCT accept 36V or 48V DC and regulate current for a separately excited DC motor. They do not change the battery into an AC source. Direction, torque, and speed are managed by switching the DC paths through semiconductor controls.

How AC Appears: Golf Cart Batteries AC or DC in AC Carts
An AC-drive cart still stores energy as DC. Its inverter controller switches pack DC into three phase-shifted motor outputs. Curtis 1236E and 1238E controllers are examples: their nominal input is DC and their motor output is AC. The motor can therefore be called an AC motor while the battery remains DC.
Never connect an AC motor directly to the battery, and never connect the motor’s three phase cables to a DC load. Controller software, encoder feedback, temperature sensing, and phase-current limits are part of the drive system.
Why It Matters for Repairs
The AC/DC distinction decides where a meter, fuse, contactor, and accessory can be connected. The battery, main contactor, charger receptacle battery side, and reducer input are DC. The utility side of an off-board charger is AC. The three heavy motor leads on an AC cart carry controller-generated waveforms that a basic multimeter cannot fully characterize.
When a schematic marks B+, B-, pack positive, or pack negative, use DC measurement procedures. When it marks U, V, and W motor phases, follow the controller service manual. Incorrect assumptions can damage the meter or controller.
Which Carts Are AC and Which Are DC
Model names alone are not enough because manufacturers changed drive systems across years. Many older EZGO TXT, Club Car DS, and Yamaha carts use DC motors. EZGO RXV and many newer performance carts use AC drive, while other recent models retain DC. Confirm by motor label, controller part number, phase cable count, and serial-specific parts catalog.
A DC motor often has A and S or F terminals. An AC motor normally has three large phase connections plus an encoder or sensor harness. Confirm power is disconnected before inspecting terminals.
What Three-Phase AC Actually Means Here
Three-phase AC means the controller produces three alternating waveforms separated in electrical phase. Their timing creates a rotating magnetic field in the motor. Frequency controls motor speed, while current and phase angle influence torque.
This AC exists downstream of the inverter only while it operates. The 48V or 51.2V battery remains DC at all times. Regenerative braking reverses energy flow through the controller and returns controlled DC to the battery when the BMS and pack can accept it.
Testing Safely on Either System
For battery voltage, put the black lead in COM, red lead in the V jack, select V DC, and measure positive to negative. A reversed connection normally shows a negative sign. If the meter is on AC volts, a pure DC source may show near zero, an unstable value, or only ripple depending on meter design. That reading is not usable pack voltage.
Never place a meter lead in the amperage jack across a battery. That creates a short through the meter. Use a rated clamp meter for current and follow category, voltage, and current limits. Continue with the golf-cart repair guides when the system is identified.
Where AC and DC Meet at the Charger
A charger is the normal boundary between utility AC and battery DC. The charger’s input stage accepts mains AC, while its output stage supplies controlled DC using the selected lead-acid or lithium profile. The charger case may therefore carry both AC-input and DC-output ratings.
Disconnecting the wall plug does not make every internal charger component safe; capacitors can retain energy. Diagnose external connectors and pack voltage unless the charger service manual authorizes internal work.
Accessories Stay DC Too
Lights, horns, stereos, USB ports, and solenoids are normally DC accessories. A 48V cart uses a DC-DC reducer to supply a balanced 12V bus. Do not tap one battery in a series pack, because the unequal draw imbalances the set.
