Overview

The Curtis 1266A-5201 is a new 36 to 48V, 275A SepEx controller: a programmable controller for separately excited motors, with regenerative braking. It is a 1266A model for a 3-wire potentiometer throttle.

We list it by exact label match. It replaces a controller whose label reads Curtis 1266A-5201. Curtis builds the 1266 in several models with different ratings and settings, so the part number on your label is the fitment.

Curtis names golf carts, small utility vehicles and light on-road vehicles as typical uses for the 1266A. It reverses the motor and brakes regeneratively without extra contactors, reads a motor speed sensor, and all 1266A models include the WalkAway function, which holds a stopped or key-off vehicle to a very low rolling speed.

Curtis programmable controllers are set up for the vehicle they go into. After you order we email you to confirm your vehicle and pack voltage, so it arrives set up for it.

Does not fit

  • Carts whose controller label reads something other than Curtis 1266A-5201
  • Series wound motors, because the 1266A drives separately excited motors only
  • Vehicles with no motor speed sensor, because the 1266A needs one to run
  • AC drive carts
  • Gas carts

How to confirm it fits

  1. Read the label on your existing controller. This part replaces a Curtis 1266A-5201.

  2. Check the throttle: this model is listed for a 3-wire potentiometer.

  3. Compare the mounting space with the drawing: a 198 x 114 mm footprint with three mounting holes.

  4. Send us a photo of the label if it is hard to read and we will match it for you.

Requirements and install notes

  1. Disconnect the battery pack and lift the drive wheels off the ground before you touch any terminal.

  2. Label the cables on the old controller first: B+, B- and M- on the bus bars, and the two motor field wires on S1 and S2.

  3. Keep the 500 ohm pre-charge resistor across the main contactor. The 1266A needs it, and it reports a pre-charge fault without one.

  4. The main contactor coil has to be wired to the controller (pin J1-7), so the controller can open the contactor if it sees a serious fault.

  5. Throttle connections for a 3-wire potentiometer: Pot High on J1-4, wiper on J1-5 and Pot Low on J1-6. Potentiometers from 5k to 10k can be used.

  6. The motor speed sensor has to be connected. A 1266A does not run without one.

  7. Fasten the controller to a clean, flat metal surface with three 6 mm (1/4 in.) screws, and leave room at the side to plug in a programmer.

  8. Bus bar bolts are M8. Keep them to 16.3 Nm (12 ft-lb) and no more than 13 mm (1/2 in.) of thread below the bar surface. Longer bolts can damage the controller.

  9. If the vehicle runs backwards with forward selected, the two field wires on S1 and S2 are swapped.

FAQ

What does SepEx mean?

Separately excited. The controller drives the motor armature and the field winding through separate outputs, which lets it reverse the motor and brake regeneratively without extra relays or contactors.

Can I use it in place of a different 1266 part number?

We list it only as a replacement for a controller labelled 1266A-5201. Other 1266 models carry other ratings and settings. Send us your label and we will tell you what matches.

What is the WalkAway function?

It limits how fast a stopped or key-off vehicle can roll, holding it to a very low speed. Curtis builds it into all 1266A models. A Tow switch turns it off for towing.

Is it programmable?

Yes. Curtis 1266A controllers work with the Curtis 1311, 1313 and 1314 programmers for parameter adjustment and diagnostics. The programmer is a separate tool.

Warranty

This part is new and covered by our returns and refunds policy. We handle any claim for a defective part directly with you. A controller damaged by a shorted motor, a failed solenoid or incorrect wiring is not covered, which is why the checks above come first.
