Club Car OBC Bypass Guide

Is your charger not kicking on? Your On-Board Computer (OBC) might be dead. Learn how to bypass it to install a modern Smart Charger.

You plug in the charger, wait for the click, and… silence. In 90% of cases, the charger is fine, but the OBC “Brain” has failed to shake hands with it.
You plug in the charger, wait for the click, and… silence. In 90% of cases, the charger is fine, but the OBC “Brain” has failed to shake hands with it.

01 // The “Brain” That Bricks

The OBC monitors energy usage. When it fails, it assumes the charger isn’t plugged in. You could spend $300 on a new one, or you can bypass it and upgrade to a Smart Charger that manages the charge itself.

02 // The Relay Test

Before cutting wires, verify the OBC is the culprit.

  • Step 1: Plug in the charger. Listen for a click (5-10 seconds).
  • Step 2: No Click? Locate the Grey “Sense Wire” (with fuse) near the receptacle.
  • Step 3: Pull the fuse and use a jumper wire to connect the Grey wire to Main Battery Negative.
  • Result: If the charger clicks ON, the OBC is dead. The bypass proved the charger works.
Safety Protocol

Before proceeding, switch Tow/Run to TOW and disconnect the Main Positive and Negative battery cables. Working on live 48V wiring causes arc welding.

03 // Part 1: Rerouting Current

We must route the charging current around the OBC directly to the battery pack.

  1. Trace: Find the thick Black Wire (Negative) on the back of the charging receptacle.
  2. Cut: Cut the black wire as close to the wire harness tube as possible.
  3. Crimp: Add a 5/16″ ring terminal to the receptacle side of the wire.
  4. Connect: Bolt this new ring terminal directly to the Battery Main Negative post.

04 // Part 2: Bypassing Lockout

The OBC has a safety circuit that prevents the cart from driving while plugged in. If you bypass the OBC, this circuit stays open, and the cart will be dead.

For Club Car Precedent

Locate the 6-pin Deutsch connector near the OBC. On the harness side, cut the Blue and White wires and splice them together.

For Club Car DS (Regen 2/IQ)

Locate the wire harness connector behind the batteries. Jump the Light Blue wire to the White wire.

05 // The Grey Wire Note

If installing a Smart Charger: Cut the Grey “Sense” wire and cap it off. Smart chargers detect voltage automatically.

If keeping Stock Charger (Emergency): Connect the Grey wire to Main Battery Negative via a fuse. Warning: The charger will NOT shut off automatically. Use a wall timer.

Summary Checklist

  • Charger Upgrade: Bypass is required for Lithium or Smart Chargers.
  • Negative to Battery: Move receptacle ground from harness to Main Negative.
  • Jump the Lockout: Blue to White, or the cart won’t run.
  • Seal It: Use heat shrink on all splices to prevent corrosion.

Verified Fix: OBC Bypass Complete

Current rerouted to battery negative and lockout circuit jumped. The cart is now ready for a Smart Charger or Lithium upgrade.
