Overview

The Curtis 1268-5403 is a new 36 to 48V, 400A SepEx controller: a programmable controller for separately excited motors, with regenerative braking. It is the 1268 model for a 3-wire potentiometer (0-5k) or 0-5V throttle.

We list it by exact label match. It replaces a controller whose label reads Curtis 1268-5403. Curtis builds a number of 1268 models for different vehicles and throttles, so the part number on your label is the fitment.

Curtis designed the 1268 for heavy-duty golf carts, personnel transports and utility vehicles. It has a built-in pre-charge resistor, a status LED that flashes fault codes, a speed sensor input and a driver for a walk-away relay or electromagnetic brake.

Curtis programmable controllers are set up for the vehicle they go into. After you order we email you to confirm your vehicle and pack voltage, so it arrives set up for it.

Does not fit

  • Carts whose controller label reads something other than Curtis 1268-5403
  • Vehicles with an ITS throttle sensor, which take one of the 1268 models built for ITS
  • Series wound motors, because the 1268 drives separately excited motors only
  • AC drive carts
  • Gas carts

How to confirm it fits

  1. Read the label on your existing controller. This part replaces a Curtis 1268-5403.

  2. Check the throttle: this model takes a 3-wire potentiometer or a 0-5V signal, not an ITS sensor.

  3. Compare the mounting space with the drawing: a 229 x 178 mm footprint with four holes 210 x 159 mm apart.

  4. Send us a photo of the label if it is hard to read and we will match it for you.

Requirements and install notes

  1. Disconnect the battery pack before you touch any terminal.

  2. Remove any pre-charge resistor fitted across the solenoid. This controller has one built in, and an external resistor can damage it.

  3. Check the motor with an ohmmeter first, with the motor disconnected: A1 to A2 roughly 0.2 to 2 ohms, F1 to F2 roughly 0.8 to 3 ohms, A1 to F1 open, and F1 to the motor case above 5 megohms.

  4. Check the main solenoid: the coil should read 100 to 250 ohms depending on the type, and the closed contacts less than 0.3 ohm. A suppression diode goes with its non-banded side to the wire from J1 pin 17.

  5. Throttle connections: Pot High on J1-13, wiper on J1-15 and Pot Low on J1-14. The wiper should read under about 0.5V with the pedal up and over about 4V with the pedal fully down.

  6. Mount the controller where its top stays reachable. The programmer port and the status LED are both on top. Any orientation is allowed, and Curtis asks for a spot that stays as clean and dry as possible.

  7. Keep the power cables clear of the cable-free zone marked on top of the controller, and stay within the stud torque given in the specifications.

  8. When the controller sees a fault, the status LED flashes a two digit code, for example 3,2 for a welded main contactor. The full code table is in the manual above.

FAQ

What does SepEx mean?

Separately excited. The controller drives the motor armature and the field winding through separate outputs, which lets it reverse the motor and brake regeneratively without extra relays or contactors.

Can I use it in place of a different 1268 part number?

We list it only as a replacement for a controller labelled 1268-5403. Other 1268 models are set up for other vehicles and throttles. Send us your label and we will tell you what matches.

Is it programmable?

Yes. Curtis 1268 controllers are programmed with a Curtis handheld programmer or PC programming station, which also reads diagnostics. The programmer is a separate tool.

Does it need a pre-charge resistor on the solenoid?

No. It has one built in. Take any external resistor off the solenoid before you fit it.

Warranty

This part is new and covered by our returns and refunds policy. We handle any claim for a defective part directly with you. A controller damaged by a shorted motor, a failed solenoid or incorrect wiring is not covered, which is why the checks above come first.
