Overview

The Curtis 1204M-4201 is a new 24 to 36V, 275A programmable controller for series wound motors. The M models carry a universal logic board that supports ten throttle types and high pedal disable options, set with a Curtis programmer.

We list it by exact label match. It replaces a controller whose label reads Curtis 1204M-4201. Curtis lists this exact model in its manual at 24 to 36V and 275A for 2 minutes, 200A for 5 minutes and 125A for 1 hour.

Curtis names golf cars, industrial vehicles and light on-road vehicles as uses for the M series. The case is sealed to IP54, the plug braking diode is inside the controller, and a status LED or a programmer connects to the 4-pin J4 connector.

Curtis programmable controllers are set up for the vehicle they go into. After you order we email you to confirm your vehicle and pack voltage, so it arrives set up for it.

How to confirm it fits

  1. Read the label on your existing controller. This part replaces a Curtis 1204M-4201.

  2. Check the pack voltage. This controller is for 24V and 36V packs.

  3. Compare the mounting space with the drawing: 173 x 146 mm, with four holes 133.3 x 130.3 mm apart.

  4. Send us a photo of the label if it is hard to read and we will match it for you.

Requirements and install notes

  1. Disconnect the battery pack and lift the drive wheels off the ground before you touch any terminal.

  2. Label the four heavy cables (B+, B-, A2 and M-) before you take them off the old controller, so every one goes back on the same bus bar.

  3. Use two wrenches on each bus bar bolt. Curtis warns that tightening with a single wrench can strain the internal connections and crack the seals around the bus bars.

  4. The motor armature connects directly to B+ and A2, because the plug diode inside the controller sits between those two terminals. Reversing is done on the field.

  5. Throttle wires go on J2 and J3. Which throttle the controller expects is a programmed setting, so a replacement has to carry the same throttle type as the controller it replaces.

  6. J5 is either the main contactor driver or the reverse input, depending on a programmed setting. Wire it the way the old controller was wired.

  7. Fasten the controller to a clean, flat metal surface with four M6 bolts. The surface is part of the heat sinking.

  8. With a status LED on J4, a steady flash means no fault. A fault shows as a two digit code, and the code table is in the manual above.

FAQ

What does the M in 1204M mean?

The M models have a universal logic board. One controller supports ten throttle types and high pedal disable options, chosen by programming, where the older 1204 was built for one throttle.

Which throttles can it work with?

Two wire pot boxes (0-5k, 5k-0 and others), 3-wire 0-5k potentiometers, voltage throttles and the ITS sensor. The throttle type is a programmed setting, so tell us what your vehicle uses when we email you after the order.

Can I use it in place of a different 1204M part number?

We list it only as a replacement for a controller labelled 1204M-4201. Other 1204M models are built for other voltages. Send us your label and we will tell you what matches.

Will it run on a 48V pack?

No. The 1204M-4201 is a 24 to 36V controller.

Warranty

This part is new and covered by our returns and refunds policy. We handle any claim for a defective part directly with you. A controller damaged by a shorted motor, a failed solenoid or incorrect wiring is not covered, which is why the checks above come first.
