So PH0908123456 is a 2009 Precedent built in the 8th week of the year. On older DS models, a single prefix letter is followed by the two-digit year (A00… = 2000).

You will find the serial on the passenger-side dashboard or inside the glovebox on a Precedent or Onward, and under the seat on a DS. The first two letters also tell you the model variant — for example, PD and PH are both Precedent trims.

E-Z-GO is the brand that trips people up. The long serial number does not contain the year. Instead, look on the same plate (under the glovebox) for the shorter manufacturer’s code — one letter followed by a few digits, like F398.

Read it like this:

• The letter is the build month: A = January through L = December.
• The last two digits are the model year: so F398 = June 1998, and G2911 would be July 2011.
• The model line follows the era: Marathon (1981–1994), Medalist (1994–1995), TXT (1996+), and RXV (2008+).

Yamaha serials begin with J, followed by two characters, a dash, and six digits. The first three characters are the model code that tells you both the model and its production years:

• JN6 = G16 (1996–2002, gas)
• JW9 = G29 “The Drive” (2007–2016, electric)
• J0C = Drive2 (2017–present, electric)

Yamaha encodes the model and its production span rather than an exact build year, so you get a tight year range rather than a single year. Find the plate under the seat, under the driver-side glovebox, or under the rear bumper.
