EZGO RXV Motor Brake

Is your RXV rolling away on hills or locking up at speed? The Motor Brake is likely failing. We explain the “Ohm Test” and safe replacement protocols.

If you own an RXV (2008+), you don’t have brake pads. You have a massive electromagnet. When this fails, you either lose braking completely (“Roll-Away”) or lock up at 20 MPH.

01 // Lab Diagnostics

Before ordering parts, check these symptoms to confirm if the brake is physically or electrically dead.

Symptom 1: The “Burnt Clutch” Smell

If you smell electrical ozone or burning rubber, the friction disc is dragging. The Fix: Replace immediately. It is physically cooked.

Symptom 2: The “Roll-Away”

Park on a slope and turn the key OFF. If you can push the cart even an inch, the springs inside the brake are worn out. There is no adjustment for this.

Symptom 3: The “No-Go” (Lock-Up)

Key ON, Pedal Down, but the wheels are locked. The controller has detected an Open Circuit and refuses to unlock the brake for safety.

02 // The Ohmmeter Test

To confirm electrical failure, you need a multimeter. Testing must be done with the Key OFF and Tow switch in TOW.

Reading Diagnosis Status
25.0 – 28.0 Ohms Factory Spec HEALTHY
Below 20 Ohms Short Circuit CRITICAL FAIL
Infinity (OL) Open Circuit DEAD MAGNET

03 // Replacement Protocols

The RXV brake is extremely sensitive. If you install it wrong, you can ruin the new part instantly.

Rule 1: OEM Only

Never buy cheap $60 brakes. If the resistance is slightly off (e.g., 20 Ohms), the controller may burn out its internal FETs trying to engage it.

Rule 2: The “3-Finger” Torque

Max Torque: 55 inch-pounds. Do not overtighten! Overtightening warps the aluminum housing, causing the friction disc to bind. Tighten by hand until snug, then add 1/8th turn.

04 // Emergency Unlock

If you are stranded with a locked brake:

  • Locate the Neutral Lever on the rear of the motor brake assembly.
  • Flip the lever to the “Tow” / “Unlock” position.
  • Warning: This mechanically separates the friction disc. The cart will have NO BRAKES. Tow slowly.

Summary Checklist

  • Smell Check: Burnt smell = Bad Brake.
  • Ohm Test: Must be 25-28 Ohms.
  • Battery Check: Low voltage can fail to disengage the brake.
  • Installation: 55 in-lbs torque max.
  • Clean the motor face surface before installing.

Verified Fix: Replace Motor Brake

Electromagnetic failure confirmed via Ohm test. Replace with OEM unit ensuring proper torque specs to avoid housing warp.
