The “Click of Death” Fix

Does your golf cart click when you press the pedal, but refuse to move? You likely have “burnt contacts.” Learn how to prove the failure with a multimeter.

You turn the key, press the pedal, and hear a CLICK… but nothing happens. Most owners assume, “It clicked, so it works!” Wrong. In the Lab, we call this the “Click of Death.”

01 // Theory: A Heavy-Duty Switch

The “Click” only tells you the magnet is working. It does not tell you if electricity is flowing through the contacts.

  • The Coil: Low current activates an electromagnet, pulling a plunger down. (The Sound).
  • The Contacts: A thick copper washer slams against two bolts to bridge 300 Amps. (The Power).

Why it Fails: Every click creates a tiny arc. Over time, carbon buildup coats the contacts. The plunger slams down, but electricity cannot pass through the soot.

02 // The Voltage Drop Test

To catch a lying solenoid, you must test it while it is trying to work.

Step 1: The Input Check

Set Multimeter to 200V DC. Black Probe on Main Negative. Red Probe on the Solenoid Battery Post.

  • Reading: Should equal Pack Voltage (e.g., 50.9V).
  • If 0V: Check Tow/Run switch or main fuse.

Step 2: The “Click” Test (Smoking Gun)

Move the Red Probe to the Controller Side post (the other large terminal). Press the pedal until it clicks.

Reading (Pedal Down) Diagnosis Status
Matches Pack Voltage Contacts Good PASS
Stays Low / 0V Burnt Contacts FAIL

03 // The Resistor Factor

The small yellow/black part bolted across the large posts is the Pre-Charge Resistor. Its job is to let a trickle of voltage pass to keep the controller capacitors charged.

Diagnosis: If the cart moves jerkily, remove the resistor and test again. If the resistor gets scorching hot, the solenoid is failing.

04 // Installation Guide

WARNING: If you install the diode backward, you will blow your controller instantly.

Diode Direction Rule

The small diode connects across the small terminals. The Silver/Grey Stripe MUST face the Positive (+) wire (from key/pedal).

Summary Checklist

  • Click ≠ Work. A click is just the magnet moving.
  • Voltage Match: Both large posts must have identical voltage when clicked.
  • Diode Stripe: Always faces the Positive wire.
  • Amperage: Upgrade to a 400A solenoid if your cart is lifted.

Verified Fix: Replace Solenoid

Voltage drop test confirmed internal contact failure. Install a heavy-duty 400A solenoid to prevent future arcing failures.
